UEFA Euro 2024 Squads FAQ
What are the rules for replacing injured players?
Teams can replace players if an injury or illness prevents them from participating, with the approval of both the team and UEFA medical staff. For goalkeepers, replacements can be made post-tournament start if other goalkeepers are still in the squad.
How do coaches select their squads?
Selection is based on current form, fitness, tactical compatibility, and the player’s ability to contribute to the team dynamics. Coaches aim to balance experience and youth to build a versatile and resilient team.
What impact does performing at UEFA Euro 2024 have on players’ careers?
Strong performances can lead to increased recognition, potentially resulting in transfers to more prominent clubs and further international call-ups, significantly impacting a player’s career trajectory.
Can players be added to the squad after the initial announcement?
No additions are typically allowed after the final squad submission unless it is a medical replacement before the first match or a goalkeeper injury occurs during the tournament.
How does UEFA handle player eligibility for the tournament?
Players must be registered by their national football associations and cannot have represented another nation in competitive fixtures at the same level. UEFA reviews all player eligibility before the tournament to ensure compliance.
What are the protocols for COVID-19, or similar health crises, regarding team management?
UEFA continues to monitor global health situations closely. Any necessary protocols or changes to regulations, such as increased squad sizes previously seen during Euro 2020, will be communicated well ahead of the tournament.
How does the tournament format affect squad selections?
The group stage followed by knockout rounds requires teams to prepare for both short-term intensity and potential long-term endurance. This influences squad composition to include players who can perform under various tactical needs and physical demands.
What is the role of a national team captain in Euro 2024?
Beyond leading the team on the field, the captain plays a crucial role in team morale and liaising between the coach and players. Their leadership is pivotal in high-pressure environments like Euro 2024.
