Olivier Giroud, the iconic AC Milan striker and France’s all-time top scorer, has announced his intention to retire from international duty after Euro 2024. Giroud’s impressive career includes 57 goals in 131 appearances for France, along with a World Cup victory in 2018.
Having played for top clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea, Giroud is part of Didier Deschamps’ provisional squad for the upcoming Euros, set to begin next month in Germany.
“This will be my last competition with Les Bleus. I’m going to miss it a lot,” Giroud shared with L’Equipe. He expressed the need to make room for younger talents, emphasizing the importance of finding the right balance in his career.
Despite not scoring or having a shot on target during France’s victorious 2018 World Cup campaign, Giroud proved his worth at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, netting four goals, including a crucial late winner against England in the quarter-finals. France’s journey in that tournament ended in the final, where they were narrowly defeated by Argentina on penalties.
Giroud’s last appearance for Milan is expected to be on Saturday when they face Salernitana on the final day of the Serie A season. At 37, Giroud’s contract with Milan is set to expire next month. Looking ahead, he has agreed to join Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer after Euro 2024, signing an 18-month deal with an option for an additional year.
